Abstract

Engines actuated by mixed steam and air or furnace gases pistons.-A mixture of hot air with furnace gases and with steam is used in the tripleexpansion engine cylinders d. Above these cylinders and actuated directly by them are the air-compressing cylinders f. The pistons of the compressors have rubber faces which are squeezed against the cylinder covers at every stroke to expel all the air. The cylinders are cooled by water jackets, and some of the water enters the cylinder from them through a ring of small perforations around the middle of its length. Some of the air supports combustion in a furnace p surrounded by a water casing, and the highly heated products are mixed with the remainder of the air in a chamber r and pass to a reservoir x whence they flow to the engine. Steam from the water casing of the furnace is sometimes mixed with the air. The engine is suitable for ships.
