8599. Boult, A. J., [Norton Grinding Co.]. April 14. Steady rests -A steady rest, described with reference to a grinding- machine but applicable also to lathes or other machine tools, has a frame 10 held on the guide-way c of the bed by a pivoted clamp 14 and screw 16. The frame has a head to receive one leg of a cranked piece 27, supported by rollers 30 in the head, and a roller 72 on the way g. The cranked piece has side extensions on which are clamped blocks 37, 60 bearing against the work. The cranked piece is pushed towards the work by a screwed rod 49 engaging a nut 52 which can slide without rotation under the action of a spring 56 and adjusting - screw 47. A somewhat similar arrangement is adopted to raise the blocks 60 against the work, each pair of blocks being subjected to an adjustable yielding pressure. For heavy work, the cranked piece may be removed and a block of wood placed in the head.
