Our said invention relates to work holders and work centeing devices for grinding machines and more particularly to means support a block of cylinders as shown and decribed in our-Patentllo. 1,6001% of which this application is a division.
An object of our invention is to provide an adjustable frame for supporting the work in position to successively grind the cylinders without removing the work from the frame. Another object being to align the block of cylinders in the frame before grinding them. Another object being to provide means whereby the aligning device may be entirely removed from the frame after securing the block thereto permitting an unobstructed access to the block.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,

Figure 3, a side elevation of one of the aligning devices with a cylinder in section, and
Figure 4, a section on the line H of Figure 3.
In said drawings, the numeral 10 denotes the base of a cylinder grinding machine provided with a reciprocating carriage 11 having mounted thereon at 90 degrees, a guideway 12 upon which is mounted the base 13 which supports the work-holding frame and which is adapted to be adjusted into different positions laterally of the machine to bring the various cylinders in line with the grinding wheel (not shown). This lateral adjustment is accomplished by means of a screw-shaft 14 swiveled into an extension on the base 13 and engaging a threaded opening in the guideway 12 and operated by a crank 15. Bearing bosses 16 are formed'at one end of the base 13 and support a shaft 17 upon which is fulcrumed the work-holder frame 18 which comprises a pair of triangular end members 19' connected by bars 20 forming a ri id structure. A lug 21 is formed on the triangular end member 19 opposite the fulcrum and an adjusting screw 22 is mounted therein and adapted to bear ment of the frame. l he members 19 have adjus bl y mounted thereon a pair of bars 23 and 2 1 to which the cylinder block is secured in any suitable manner. The block when mounted has a lateral adjustmentby'means the screw 14 and avertical adjustment by means ofthe screw 22 which permit the block to he placed in the exact location for proper grinding.
The means for properly mounting the block in the workholder 18 comprises a pair of gages 25 slidably mounted on a bar 26 extending across the face of the work holder. This bar is supported at its ends in fixed brackets 27 which are precisely positioned, and held in place by conical detents 28 engaging the bar. One of said gages is shown in detail in Figures 8 and 4 and comprises a pair of legs 29 adapted to straddle the bar 26 and a hook-like portion 30 adapted to extend into a cylinder. Each leg of this hook-like portion has a transverse opening in which is seated a movable cap 31 which caps are internally threaded in the reverse directions and adapted to be moved toward and away from each other on a screw 32 having at its intermediate point a knurled nut 33 fixed thereto. A pair of set screws 34: engage flat surfaces on the caps (or longitudinal grooves therein) to prevent rotation of the caps.
In the operation of our machine a. cylinder block ispositioned on the work holder and fastened to the bars 23 and 24, the correct adjustment for aligning the end cylinders horizontally with the center of rotation of the grinding wheel sleeve being determined by means of the gages 25 on the bar 26. After the block is locked in place the bar 26 with the gages 25 is removed from the work holder to permit access of the grinding wheel to the cylinders. i
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in our device Without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore we do not limit ourselves to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specificationbutonly as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully describedour said invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a cylinder grinder, a table, a Work holder pivoted. at one end thereon having upstanding arms, means on the other end of the Work holder for vertically adjusting'it relatively to the table, bars vertically adjustable on said arms for carrying a cylinder block, and a gage for determining the position of the block, substantially as set forth.
2. In a cylinder grinder, a table, a Workholder pivoted thereon having upstanding arms, bars vertically adjust-able on said arms for carrying a cylinder block, a gage adapted to enter a cylinder for determining the position of the block, and means for vertically adjusting the Workholder, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cylinder grinder, a Work support adapted to carry acylinder block, a bar on the Work support, gages loosely mounted on said bar and each having a bent portion extending forwardly therefrom and each adapted to enter a cylinder, and means on the bent portion adapted to engage opposite sides of the cylinder, substantially asset forth.
4. In a cylinder grinder, a Work support having means for carrying a cylinder block, a bar on the Work support, gages loosely mounted on said bar and having curved yokes extending forwardly therefrom, each of said curved yokes being adapted to enter a different cylinder, said yokes having oppositely movable abutments, and a reverselythreaded screw engaging said abutments, substantially as set forth.
