The swivelling end bearings p, Fig. 1, of the abutment roll a are carried by heads g which slide in guides i against the action of springs h, adjustable at k, the movement of the roll towards the tool cylinder b being limited by the abutment of a head o on a stop n. The guides i are formed in a stirrup c pivoted at d so that the roll a may be moved with regard to the tool by means of an eccentric device e. The roll a, as shown in Fig. 2, preferably consists of a tube covered with rubber, and between the end bearings it is supported by rollers .s, t which are carried by spring-pressed heads g. Adjustment of the springs h enables the working pressure to be adapted to differences of thickness in the hide along its width.
