Abstract

2967. Stamp, T. Feb. 6. Lift valves; spindles; dirt, preventing lodgment of; casings; repairing, facilitating.-In screw- down valves for steam, gases, or other fluids, the spindle A, Fig. 1, is made hollow to receive the valve-stem C. The stem C is provided at the top with a squared part D so as to allow of it being turned independently of the spindle A whereby the conical valve B may be ground on its seat thus dislodging any dirt accumulated there. In order to prevent an escape between the valve-stem C and the spindle A, the top E of the valve B is made conical so as to fit closely against the spindle A. For a similar purpose the valve-stem C, Fig. 2, may be enlarged at M and carry packing N. To facilitate the renewal and replacement of the valve B, the casing J is supplied with a cap I which screws into it. By turning the hand-wheel K, the valve may be released and will open with the upward thrust of fluid, or, if desired, may be made to lift with the spindle.
