To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, J OHN J LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Louis, Missouri, haveinv'ented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to valves, and par ticularly to valves of the type shown in my prior U. S. Patent No. 1,225,974, granted to me on the 15th day of May, 1917, wherein the stem of the valve is provided with a coneshaped portion that projects upwardly into a tapered seat in the bonnetof the valve, so as to prevent leakage around the portion of the top of the bonnet.
The main object of my present invention is to provide a valve of the character referred to, in which the cone-shaped portion and tapered seat that prevent leakage around the valve stem are augmented or safe-guarded by the provision of an independent leakprev'enting means that is actuated by the pressure of the fluid in the valve;
, Another object is to provide a packless valve of the general type referred to that is equipped with the usual leak-preventing means and also with an independent, removable means for preventing leakage around the valve stem in case the first mentioned means becomes inoperative. Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.

I have found in practice that the conical portion 6 and cooperating tapered seat 7 do not always perform their intended function, this being due to several causes, some of which are,the lodgment betweenthe cooperating surfaces of particles of foreign matter, poor or faulty grindingin of these surfaces, and weakening or breakage of the spring that holds said surfaces in contact.

By the simple means just described the disk is held securely in op erative position on the valve stem D, but can be readily removed for replacement by simply removing the spring wire 14 and slipping the disk oif of the valve stem endwise.
As shown in Fig. 1, the disk E is so disposed between the base of the enlarged conical portion 6 and the retaining wire 14 that it is permitted a slight vertical movement 'on the valve stem, and consequently, can'be forced against its seat 11 absolutely inde retaining wire 15, and consequently, will'be a slight distance away from its seat 11. As
soon as thev'alve'C is opened soasto admit a' fluid under pressure to thebonnet B, the
pressure therein will act to force the disk upwardly. against its seat and against: the base of the conical portion 6-, thus prevent ing: any of-the'fluid from escaping around the valve stem. It is obvious that should the conical portion 6 and its cooperating seat 7 not engage properly at anytime, due to various reasonsheretofore mentioned; the pressure-of the medium that passes through the VEtlVB'Willl' automatically seat the diskE, and thus eflectivelyprev'ent any leakage of fluid around the valve-stein. Itis'also obviousthat' when the valve C is in its extreme open position, the upper edge of the member 2 willengage" thedislr and positively force it into engagement with its sea-t, thus further insuring a tight joint. 7
I prefer to form thedi'slrE of fiber or vulcanite, as these materials can be obtained cheaply and are possessed of the desired wearingqualities,-:flexibility and resiliency, butIdo 'notwishto-limit myself to any particular material, as- I am aware of various compositions-which are'equally well adapted fonthis purpose? By constructing a valve in the manner above described there iszno' liability of the fluid that passes through-the valve leaking or escaping around the valve stem, asthe usual leak-preventing" means is augmented by an additional leak-preventing means which operatesindependently of said firstmentioned means. My improvement can be installedin the valve at a very slight addi tional expense,=is easily applied, and-readily detachablefor the purpose of renewal.
Having thus described myinvention; what I; claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v 4

In a packless valve of the type having a conical portion on the valve stem that projects upwardly into a tapered seat in the valve body, an annular horizontal seat on the valve body adjacent the tapered seat, a non-circular portion on said valve stem, and a disk-shaped member that is adapted to be forced upwardly against said horizontal seat by the pressure of the medium controlled by the valve, said member having a non-circular opening therein that fits over the non-circular portion of said valve stem.
10. In a packless valve of the type having a conical portion on the valve stem that projects upwardly into a tapered seat in the valve body, an annular horizontal seat on the valve body adjacent the tapered seat, a member movably mounted on said valve stem that is adapted to be forced upwardly against said horizontal seat by the pressure of the medium controlled by the valve, and
detachable means for retainmg said member in operative position.
