Loading-appliances.-Fig. 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan, of a safety-device for preventing the closing of the breech while the loading tray is in the line of recoil of the gun, and for holding the tray clear of the gun when the breech is closed. The loading-tray (not shown) is pivoted at C' to an arm C pivoted to a bracket B', and is held parallel to the gun A in all positions, as described in Specification No. 9417, A.D. 1899. A rocking bar b, supported in bearings on the slide frame extension B, carries at either end, arms b<2>, b<3>. When the arm C is in the loading position, a spring b<4> rocks the bar b, so that the arm b<2> passes in rear of the end a' of a " trigger-piece " a, which is pivoted at ax to the breech-end of the gun, and is pressed outwards by a spring a<3>. In this position, shown by the chain lines in Fig. 3, the end a<1> of the " trigger-piece" prevents the full closing motion of the breech-operating lever D, so that the breech cannot be locked. On its outward swing, the arm C engages the arm b<3>, and, by throwing over the bar b, releases the " trigger-piece" a, and permits the closing of the breech, at the same time a lug c projecting below the arm C rides on to a third arm b<5> on the rod b, set at right angles to the arm b<3>, and engages in a locking-notch. The releasing motion of the rod b is prevented by the lever D, which holds the tail-piece a' of the " trigger-piece " a in front of the arm b<2>.
