Abstract

26,872. Vickers, A., and Buckham, G. T. Nov. 18. Loading - appliances. -Relates to loading- trays which swing horizontally from the side of the gun to the loading position, and while in motion are maintained parallel to the axis of the gun, and consists in pivoting the tray on a supporting- arm hinged to the cradle so that t h e weight of the tray is removed from the parallel-motion mechanism. In the example shown, the loading-tray B is carried by the arm C, which is pivoted at B<1> to the tray, and at c to the bracket D on the gun cradle, and is maintained parallel to the gun bore by the arms d<1>, d<2> pivoted at d'x and d<2Î> to the stationary bracket D, and at their free ends to an horizontal link b carried by the pivot B<1>. The arm C bears the weight of the tray, so that there is no load on the links forming the parallel . motion. The tray is normally retained in the receiving position by a pivoted catch b<1Î>, the nose b<Î> of which engages a notch c<Î> in the arm C, and its motion is arrested when it reaches the receiving and. loading positions respectively by stops c<1Î> and c<1>. When the breech is closed, the tray is retained out of the path of recoil of the gun by the engagement of a roller a<2Î>, mounted on the extension a<2> of the breech-actuating lever A<2>, with the edge C<0> of the arm C. The projectile tray is preferably so constructed that, in the loading position, its front portion enters the breech, and it may be short or long, or formed of two telescopic parts clamped together in order to receive the projectile only, or both the projectile and the powder charge.
