Abstract

28,589. Childs, C. V. Dec. 29. Revolving-cylinder type of gas engines. A number of pairs of double-acting cylinders b are arranged round a shaft f<1> with their axes parallel to a tangent. Two adjacent cylinders have common combustion chambers a, and each piston c drives through a connecting-rod d and crank e, a pinion e<1> gearing with a wheel f on the shaft f<1>. Common cams h<1>, i<1>, driven at the proper speed to produce a four-stroke cycle in the cylinders by gearing m, n, work the admission and exhaust valves h, i. The cylinders may revolve and the shaft remain stationary ; in this case the charge is drawn from a chamber o, the periphery of which is formed by a ring o<2> of U section revolving between the discs o<2>, o<3> and connected to the admission pipe q ; the exhaust chamber r is similarly constructed. The cylinders are cooled by their movement through the air. The frame s may form one member of a friction clutch for transmitting the movement of the cylinders. Two sets of cylinders may be parallel to one another on the same shaft.
