Abstract

25,945. Pernot, L. J. C. J. Nov. 12. Fixed-abutment type; movable-abutment type; cooling parts; packing vanes; working- fluid supply.-A fixed or revolving cylinder engine, working on a four-stroke cycle, has four curved cylinders arranged in pairs in parallel planes; arms carrying the pistons oscillate about a fixed shaft and form guides for sliding pieces which operate cranks on a shaft, which in a fixed-cylinder engine, forms the driving- shaft, or in a revolving-cylinder engine carries a pinion travelling around a central pinion secured to the fixed shaft. In a fixed-cylinder engine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the casing comprises an outer cylinder 1, an inner cylinder 4 having a sector-shaped opening with walls 5, 6, and end plates 2, 3, the working cylinders 15, 16 being arranged in the annular space thus formed. The arms 9, 10 oscillate about a fixed shaft 7 within the sector-shaped opening. The cranks 22, 24 on the driving-shaft 23 carry the sliding pieces 21, and are set at 180 degrees so that the moving masses are balanced. The inlet and exhaust valves are operated by cams on a shaft 26 driven by a chain 25 from the shaft 23. The chain 25 also drives pumps 29, 30 which circulate a cooling-liquid within the casing, apertures being provided in the casing to permit the circulation. A cooling-jacket may also be provided around the outer casing. Several elements comprising four cylinders may be arranged round the fixed shaft 7 and drive the shaft 23. In the revolving-cylinder engine shown in Fig. 3, the working chambers are each limited by two pistons 40, 42, the four pairs of pistons being connected to four arms 38, 39, 38<1>, 39<1>, each carrying sliding pieces 44 operating cranks 45 on shafts 46, 48 carrying pinions 47, 49, travelling round a central pinion 34 secured to the fixed shaft 33. The valves 55, 56 are operated by arms 54 rocked by rods 53 travelling over cams 52 on the fixed shaft. The cylinders may be of square section, the pistons having packing as shown in Fig. 4. The pistons have a middle cylindrical part 58, on which is an elastic ring 59 open on the side away from the centre of the engine. Angular pieces 62 fill the corners of the piston, those on the side away from the centre of the engine being pressed against the cylinder walls by centrifugal force, and the others by the ring 59.
