Abstract

12,879. Williams, W. D. June 16. Revolving-cylinder type. -A number of pairs of pistons are mounted to oscillate upon spindles 15 carried by a rotary frame 33,34. The hollow pistons 19, 24 are connected to cranks formed at 180 degrees to one another upon their spindles, and drive toothed pinions 36 which gear with the internal toothing on the fixed ring 37. The rotary frame is fixed to the main shaft 7. An auxiliary shaft 47, the hollow end of which surrounds a sleeve upon the end of the shaft 7, carries a toothed wheel 45, which gears on the inner side with the pinions 36. Thus power can be taken from either or both shafts, the shaft 47 revolving at a higher speed than the shaft 7. Steam is admitted by the pipe 1 to the annular chamber 4 and passes by way of the hollow shaft, the passages 8, and pipes 10 to the steam chests 13 at the ends of the cylinder spindles. Ported passages 16, Fig. 7, in these spindles co-operate with ports in the cylinder heads to conduct the steam into the high-pressure cylinders 18, exhaust it from those cylinders, pass it into the cylinders 25, and exhaust it into the fixed outer chamber 39 from which it is led by the pipe 32. The ports 17, Fig. 7, leading to the high-pressure cylinders are controlled by long rotary valves 49 which are rotated according to the speed by centrifugal devices, Fig. 10. These devices each comprise a lever 57 linked to a valve 49 and carrying a curved weight 64 which tends to rotate the lever in opposition to a spring 69. The levers 57 are all connected together by blocks 59, mounted on a revoluble ring 60 and entering the slotted ends of the levers.
