23,380. Long [nÚe Guiran, L.], Mme. M. April 25, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Screw propellers.-Fig. 5 shows a front elevation, and Fig. 6 a sectional plan of the propeller. The screw is formed by small surfaces a arranged round a cylinder b. Each surface has the form and arrangement of the extremity of the blade of an ordinary propeller fixed to the centre of the cylinder. These blades a may be placed in the same plane as shown in Fig. 2, or in different planes as in Fig. 6, so as to form one or more screws, these screws being arranged so as to prevent one blade from working in the track of another. The cylinder b may be solid or hollow; when hollow its interior may be divided by one or more helicoidal partitions c, or partitions of other form. The circumference, it is stated, should be at least equal to the sum of the magnitudes of the blades fixed in succession around its periphery. The blades may also be arranged at the extremity of arms proceeding from the propeller shaft. In this case, a small partition may be fixed on the inner portion of the blade in order to obviate gyratory movements coming from the centre.
