Abstract

153,534. Henderson, A. L. May 5, 1920. Screw propellers.-The root of each propeller blade is made conical so as to engage in an undercut conical recess in the boss, which is divided transversely. The blades 1 are provided with conical ends 2 which engage in conical recesses 3 formed in the halves 4, 5 of the boss. The boss is divided at 7 upon a plane which coincides with the axes of the blades 1. The halves of the boss are arranged in their correct relative positions by dowel pins 8 and are mounted on the tapered end 9 of the propeller shaft by means of a key 12. The parts of the boss are clamped together by means of a stream-line nut 10. The two parts 4, 5 are hollowed out at 13 so that only the end portions 14, 15 bear upon the shaft. The recesses 3 are provided with conical surfaces 17 and flat surfaces 19 to fix the blades at the correct radial distance from the shaft. The blades may be fixed at any desired angle, and the root portion of the blades and the boss are made with their exposed surfaces of substantially spherical form.
