Abstract
8477. Foulis, J., Morrison, J., Wilson, J., and Foulis, S., [Executors of Foulis, W.]. April 14. Gas retorts.-An apparatus, of the kind described in Specification No. 7845, A.D. 1901, for charging retorts, has a scoop and pusher which travel together into the retort, after which simultaneous movement the scoop is arrested and the pusher travels forward independently. The frame 1 of the apparatus supports a carriage 2 carrying the scoop 3. A tubular piston-rod 6 is secured to the frame and conducts water or other fluid under pressure from a pipe 7 to the front end of a hydraulic cylinder 5, which moves through a stuffing-box on the carriage. The pusher 9, having a wedge-shaped extension 10, is secured to the front of the cylinder. During the forward stroke of the cylinder, the carriage is temporarily locked thereto by means of triggers or spring pawls 12 on the carriage engaging with a collar 11 on the cylinder. These pawls are released, before the end of the stroke, by stops 13 on the frame and, soon afterwards, the carriage is suddenly brought to rest by the stops 13 striking projections 14 on the carriage. The cylinder, with the pusher, then continues its traverse. The valves employed in the valve-box 8, to which the pipe 7 is fitted, may be of the kind described in Specification No. 18,365, A.D. 1900, or of any suitable kind. On the cylinder is a collar 26, which comes into contact with a curved projection 24 on one arm 23 of a twoarmed lever 22 mounted on the carriage ; the other arm 25, when the lever 22 is actuated, is in a position to act on a projection 19 on a spindle 17, and thereby cause the exhaust valve to open and the inlet valve to close. Water or other fluid under pressure is constantly admitted, by a pipe 71 into an annular chamber, of comparatively small sectional area, between the cylinder and piston-rod, and effects the return of the cylinder. The foregoing charging operation causes the far end of the retort to be charged, and a second operation is necessary for charging the near end. During this second operation the stroke should be less, and for bringing the cylinder to rest, in a suitable position, sliding stops 27, operated by means of bell-crank levers, rods 33, and a hand-lever 34, are employed. If desired, the charging-apparatus may have its cylinder fixed and piston-rod movable.
