Abstract

14,413. Frauenfelder, J., Barraja-. June 26, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Lift valves; actuating valves; casings.-Relates to firing-valves for the torpedo tubes of submarine boats. Compressed air from the reservoir passes through the inlet b, Fig. 2, to the chamber a of the valve f, Fig. 1, which is connected by its stem i to a piston m, of larger diameter than the valve, and working in a cylinder k separated from the chamber a by a partition j having a stuffing-box n for the rod i. The air enters the cylinder k through a by-pass p, and acting differentially upon the valve f and piston m, retains the valve in its closed position until the cock r is rotated to close the by-pass and open the cylinder k to the atmosphere. The pressure on the piston m being thus relieved, the compressed air opens the valve f and ejects the torpedo from the tube d. The by-pass p being again opened, the valve is closed, against the water which enters the tube d, by a spring o and the pressure of the residual air in the chamber a.
