Abstract

12,201. Cairns, A. P., and Cairns, T. W. May 18. Hydraulic m a c h i n e s and apparatus. - Expanding pulleys are operated by liquid contained in an expansible pressure - chamber c, which rotates with the pulley and is made of flexible material or takes the form of a cylinder and piston. A non-rotary feed pipe n enters a rotary deliverychamber p, and is formed with a valvehead h, which is kept pressed against a seating e by a spring s. A passage y leading from the chamber p to the chamber c is provided with a valve v, which closes the chamber c. As liquid enters by the pipe n, the valve v opens, and the chamber c expanding, thrusts a movable pulley flange f towards a fixed flange g. On the pipe n being thrust inwards, a passage is opened from the chamber p to the atmosphere. On further movement, the pipe n engages a stem t projecting from the valve v, and so opens that valve, and allows the liquid to escape from the chamber c. In a modified arrangement, the valve v is released by a wire thrust through the pipe n. In a further modification, the pipe n enters the chamber p through a tapered stuffing- box.
