A number of toothed wheels A, A', corresponding to the number of speeds required, are mounted on a sleeve F on the motor or driving shaft G, each of these wheels gearing with a pinion H, H<1> fixed to the driven shaft I. Each of the wheels A, A<1> is formed with a projecting portion B, C on each side, the ends of these projections registering with key slots d formed in the wheel hub. A drum E on each wheel acts as a distance piece to separate the wheels. The shaft G is movable longitudinally, and carries a key, projection, or tappet g, which, by moving the shaft, can be brought into engagement with any of the projections on the wheels according to the gear required. The projection g passes through the slots d in the wheels. When the projection g is out of engagement with the wheels, the driven shaft I is at rest.
