3704. Bragstad, 0. S., and La Cour, J. L. April 29, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Electric railways and tramways.-An alternating- current machine, capable of being used as converter, motor, or generator, consists essentially of an ordinary asynchronous motor and a rotary converter, mechanically coupled together, the secondary winding of the asynchronous motor being con. nected in concatenation with equidistant parts of the armature winding of the rotary converter. Fig. 6 shows the application of the invention to a system of electric traction. The stator S of the asynchronous motor is laid between the rails, while the rotor P is carried bv the vehicle and connected through a switch A<u> to the armature winding of the converter U, which is also supplied with continuous current from a battery. At starting, the switch A<u> is opened, and the resistances W, W<1> are partially switched off. On attaining a certain speed, the switch is closed, and the combination operates as a synchronous motor. The speed may then be regulated by varying the resistance.
