Abstract

14,293. Belfield, R., [Scott, C. F., and Lamme, B. G.]. June 28. Electric railways and tramways.-Relates to means by which direct - current motors can be operated at variable speeds from an alternating- current circuit. A rotary transformer or converter is employed to convert the alternating current into a direct current, a step-up or stepdown transformer provided with means for altering the relative length of the primary and secondary being employed to vary the electromotive force. The Figure shows the system applied to an electrically-operated vehicle. The alternating current is supplied from an overhead conductor 1, through a trolley 5, to a transformer 4. The secondary of a transformer is divided into sections, and is connected to the converter 11 through a switch 9. The motors 16 are supplied with a direct current. In order to secure a constant speed of the converter, a synchronous motor 17 may be supplied with current from one of the sections of the transformer. A separate exciter may be employed, or a battery 22, for starting.
