Abstract

22,888. Wise, W. L., [Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon]. Nov. 12. Electric locomotives and motor vehicles; conductors; collectors.-The armatures M of the propelling-motors on the train are connected in parallel or series parallel without resistances or switches to the terminals B' of the continuouscurrent generator G<1> of a motor generator. Their field windings S are connected individually or in groups through a resistance R' with the terminals B<2> of a separate continuous-current generator G<2>, which preferably also effects the excitation of the generator G' through a regulating-resistance R<2>, or a separate exciter may be used. The continuous current generators G<1>, G<2> are driven by a motor W, preferably with single-phase alternating current. The speed and torque of the propelling-motors on the vehicles are thus affected without starting-resistances by varying the terminal voltage of the generator G<1>. One or more of the vehicles in the train carry the motor generator and propelling-motors, other vehicles are provided with motors only, and some may be without motors. All the motors are controlled from the motor generator through the three conductors, for which the vehicle frames or rails may serve as one, and single motors or groups are cut in or out by switches such as J<1>, J<2>. Current may be supplied to the vehicle from overhead conductors at different potentials on different parts of the line, a lower potential being supplied at stations, crossings, &c. At such points there may be two conductors, one L<2> over the vehicle rubbed by a bow collector C<2>, and the other L<1> at the side for high potential with a pivoted arm collector C<1>. These sections of the conductor may be supplied through transformers Ts having an output adequate to the power consumed by the motor generator when running idle or under a small load. Other transformers Ti on the vehicle render the current suitable for use in the motor part W of the motor generator. The motion of the bow collector C<2> may work a switch A, which makes and breaks the two circuits on the vehicle.
