3563. Barge, R., and Givaudan, L. Feb. 14. Saccharin.-To avoid loss in the oxidation of toluene sulphamide to saccharin owing to the oxidation of the saccharin first formed, the permanganate or other oxidizing-agent is used in quantity insufficient completely to oxidize all the amide. The amide is treated with the oxidizing- agent in an alkaline or neutral solution, the temperature being kept below 60‹ C. Undissolved amide is dissolved by adding caustic soda before or after the addition of the oxidizing-agent, and the precipitated manganese is filtered off. Excess amide is precipitated by neutralizing the solution with hydrochloric acid &c., and is filtered off for further use, and the filtrate is then acidified to separate out the saccharin.
