Abstract

423. Hemingway, H. W. Jan. 7. Iron sulphate, chloride and oxide.-Consists in removing or utilizing the free sulphuric or hydrochloric acid contained in the waste pickling-liquors used in treatirg iron and steel preparatory to galvanizing. The sulphuric-acid liquors, containing ferrous sulphate, are treated with carbonate of calcium, strontium, or barium, or preferably iron carbonate, such as spathose or spathic ore, whereby any ferric salt is precipitated as oxide, and the free acid either precipitated as an alkaline-earth sulphate or converted into ferrous sulphate, which may be crystallized out on boiling. The hydrochloric-acid liquors may be treated similarly, but in this case the alkaline-earth salt remains in solution with ferrous chloride, which may be removed as oxide by adding caustic soda. The precipitated oxide, obtained as above, may be added to another portion of waste containing ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid, neutralizing as much free acid as desired and forming more ferrous sulphate.
