Abstract

3184. Young, B. M., and Murray, W. G. Feb. 10. Pistons; flywheels; connecting - rods.-A fourcylinder internal-combustion engine, suitable for motor cars, is constructed with the cylinders arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the crank shaft. Each pair A', A<2> and A<3>, A<4> of cylinders may comprise a single casting. Opposite pistons B<1>,< >B<3>, B<2>, B<4> are also connected together by the hollow parts C', C' with a space for the passage of the crank shaft to which they are connected by a single rod. The flywheel D<3> carries one member of a friction clutch, the other D<4> being pressed against it by a spring d' bearing against a thrust ball bearing at its inner end. The clutch is thrown out of gear by a forked lever D<5>. The part D<4> drives a sprocket-wheel D<7> through the engagement of lateral teeth d<6>, d<7> on them. The connecting-rod brasses are secured by a strap c<2> and set up by a wedge worked by a screw P<1>.
