Abstract

1383. Marks, E. C. R., [Moore, W. J. P.]. Jan. 18. Crank chambers; fly-wheels.-Relates to a construction of crank-shaft, suitable for use in motorvehicles and shown mounted in the casing of a multi-cylinder engine. Each crank consists of two parallel webs or arms B, C connected by an integral pin D, a central portion E being removed to reduce the weight. The series of cranks A<1>, A<2>, A<3>, A<4> are rigidly connected together, in any desired angular relation, by bolts F, in addition to which polygonal &c. projections J in one part may engage corresponding recesses in the adjacent member. Extensions C<1> are formed as shown upon one or both the web members of each section, and constitute journals by means of which ball races G and straps &c. H are arranged between the cranks to support the device. In the construction shown, one end section A <4> is connected through a similar bearing &c. to a fly-wheel W. The other end A' is similarly mounted and secured to a shaft extension K for various purposes, especially for starting the shaft by hand when the engines are of the internal-combustion type. Ball-bearing seats for the crank-shaft are formed in the engine casing.
