Abstract
27,430. Harris, W. P. Dec. 12. Filling with liquids.-In racking off beer or other liquids into casks or barrels, a reducing- valve is used to enable the liquid to be delivered at a uniform low pressure to prevent frothing and the escape of gases. The reducing-valve which it is preferred to use is that described in Specification No. 27,427, A.D. 1902, and shown in Fig. 3, but any reducing-valve may be used. The reducing- valve D is interposed between the main C, from which the casks &c. are filled, and the vat or reservoir A. It consists of a balanced valve E, the spindle of which is connected with a float I by a chain J. When the pressure is too high, or the liquid flows too rapidly, the liquid rises in the tube H and lifts the float, which closes the valve against its seating G<1>, G'. Thus the valve can be so balanced that the liquid escaping at the outlet d<1> will be always at the same pressure. The apparatus is fitted so that the vat can be also filled from a pipe K<1> through the outlet C<1>, and the main C may be in connection with another vat through the pipe P.
