UNITED STATES VATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL M. RIIOADS AND lADAM H. HAMRIOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO PHILADELPHIA BREWERY APPLIANCE COM- PANY, A CORPORATION OE NET JERSEY.
RACKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 71 6,346, dated December 16, 1902.
Application iiled November 22, 1901. Serial NO- 83,237- (NO UJOBL) To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL M. RHOADS and ADAM H. HAMRICK, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
` Our invention relates to improvements in 1o racking devices, and more particularly to improvements in that class of devices for filling barrels, kegs, or other packages in which are combined astationary filling-head with a movable filling-tube, the object of our invention I5 being to furnish a filling-tube and fillinghead which after the barrel, keg, or package is completely filled with liquid may be operated io conjointly form a seal which will prevent all escape of iuid from the tube or head zo between the times that they are removed from one package and secured to another package.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation through a barrel and through a iilling head and tube embodying our improvements, the filling-tube being loweredto the bottom side of the barrel; Fig.
3o 2, a sectional elevation through the fillinghead and filling-tube, showing their position when the latter is drawn up against the former to form a seal; and Fig. 3, a side elevation of the lowerl part of the filling-tube.
a is the filling-head and l) the filling-tube of a racking device. The head and tube may be of any of the well-known general constructions, the formerbeing adapted to be secured at its bottom to a bung in any well-known 4o manner and the latter being adapted to slide through the former, so that its lower end, through which the liquid is discharged, may reach the lower side or end of the barrel to `be filled, its upper end being connected in the usual mannerwith the tank or cask which holds the liquidto be placed in the barrel.
For the purposes of our invention the illing-tube b is closed at the bottom, as shown at c, and the sides of the tube above the bottom are furnished with perforations d,through 5o which when the tube is lowered the liquid can escape, said perforations or openings d being made preferably large, so as to prevent, foaming of the liquid.
eis a piece, preferably of rubber and conical, as shown, carried by the lower end of tube b,which is adapted when the tube is fully lifted not only to form a stop to limit the upward movement of the tube, but to engage with the bottom of the head a, as shown in Fig. 2, 6o to form a plug or valve which completely and effectually closes the lower end of the head. We prefer to form the lower end of the head a with a countersink f, which is adapted to receive the washer e. For con 65 venience in construction said countersink f is formed on an annular ring g,which is adapted to be screwed to the head a, as shown. The filling-head a. is provided at a suitable point with a threaded passage h for the re- 7o ception of an overiioW-pipe. It will be noticed that the ring g forms a shoulder for the support of the packing 7.o, which is interposed between said ring and a shoulder Z on said head and placed around the lower end ofthe latter, whereby by properly rotating said ring said packing may be compressed, so as to form a tight joint with said bung when the head is fitted in the latter. The ring depends from the head into the barrel, and its 8o countersinkf forms a seat which may be effectively closed by the valve e when the tube b is fully raised. A barrel, keg, or other package having been completely filled with liquid, the filling-tube b is drawn up until the valve e completely closes the countersink in the lower end of the filling-head a.. When this is done, the filling-head a may be removed from the package without .thepossibility of any leakage of Huid therefrom. The conical valve 9o e is fitted on a neck dependingfrom thelower end of the tube b, which may be removed and replaced. i
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty l. In a racking device, a tubular head having its lower end adapted to be inserted into a bung, a packing encircling said end, an adjustable ring on said end forming on top a shoulder against which said packing rests and having a seat at bottom and a illingtube which is passed through said head and provided at its lower end with a valve, the latter being adapted to close against said seat.
2. In a racking device, of the character stated, the combination with a filling-tube havinga valve at its lower end and openings above the same, of a head, which encircles a portion of said tube outside of the vessel to be filled, and means for firmly connecting said head with the bung` of said vessel, said means consisting of packing on said head, a shoulder on said head above said packing, and a ring on said head below said packing, said ring forming a shoulder on which the under side of said packing is rested and having a seat for said valve.
3. In a racking device, of the character stated, the combination With a iilling-tube having a Valve at its lower end and openings above the same, of a head, which encircles a portion of said tube outside of the vessel to be filled, and means for firmly connecting said head with the bung of said vessel, said means consisting of packing on said head, a shoulder on said head above said packing, and a ring on said head below said packing, said ring forming a shoulder on which the under side of said packing is rested and having a seat for said valve, said ring being adjustably connected with said head.
