Stuffing - boxes.- In order to enable the piston-rod to deviate laterally without causing the packing to become loose, an independently-movable prolongation of the stuffing-box is provided. Fig. 1 shows a section. At the end of the stuffing-box is placed a steel ring 8 resting on flange packing 10 and forming a seating for the ring-like extension 1 of the stuffing-box. This extension has a flange 2 with holes through which pass the gland studs 4 with plenty of play. The extension 1 is closed by the gland 5, and is kept up to its seating by springs 7 resting against abutments which may be formed by nuts and washers on the studs 4.
