Propelling and steering by water jets.- Within a chamber a is rotated a screw propeller or rotary pump, which draws in water through a channel b and discharges it through conduits m or o. Valves p control these conduits so that the vessel is driven ahead or astern, or steered as desired. Steering can also be effected by discharging water from one of the stern orifices x, y, which are controlled by a valve v. The screw or other pump is driven by a band on the pulleys f, g.
