Propelling and steering by water jets.-Water at considerable pressure is delivered to reservoirs a, a by pumps e, e, and is admitted intermittently into pipes b or c, leading aft or forward, according to the direction in which the vessel is to travel. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the ends of the pipes are closed at d and are slotted at k, k. Similarly-slotted sleeves l, l embrace the pipes, and act as valves, being rotated by pinions n, n engaging toothed rings o, o. Inwardly-opening valves admit water to the pipes b, c from the outside of the vessel after each impulse of water under pressure. The vessel may be steered by suitably manipulating the jets.
