Abstract

Propelling and steering by steam jets.-The hull i s provided with keels 1, diverging from front to rear, so as to provide a ready escape of the water contained between them when acted upon by the steam discharged from the expansion chambers 5. These chambers 5 are in the shape of cones having the point towards the bow of the boat, and are in communication with steam pipes 6, through which steam is discharged from steam chests 7 supplied from the boiler 9. Expansion chambers 11 opening towards the bow of the boat are situated between the forward sections of the keel, and are utilized for driving astern. Deflectors 14, operated by rack- and-pinion gear from the steam cylinder 18, prevent entrance of water to chambers 11 when running ahead. Steering is effected by expansion chambers 22, 23, arranged in an athwartship channel 4 and operating in a similar manner to the chambers 5.
