I `rllhese severa'ltubes, a, b, and c, have, severally, projecting intol them, transversely or otherwise, und. intermediuftcly of their length, smaller pipes ortubes, d, closed nt thei'rnuter ends, and each provided with aflateragl orifice, e, as inore'oleurly'seen in ig. 5, facing in direc-tion ofthe length ofthe larger tube within u'lfieh' it lies, or'these smaller tubes el may have theircndsleft open, and be solbent, or said pipes 'so arranged, es to present similarly-disposed jet-orifices, e, vithinsand relatively to the outer or larger tubes. j'lhese smallerftubes objetpipes voreh connected :with 'or to any suitable supplylpipes v"or reservoirs, containing compressed uit, c zxrb'onie'-, 4ucid gus condensed solid, er other aeriform or gaseous fluid under ,heavy pressure', so thatoopening suitable valvesor stops, thefexpnnd'ing gus or ueriform fluid will, i-'n issuingout of the-orifices'e of theppes ci', spread or expand itseif, and operateto displace or drive out the water in the tubes a, b, or c, lyingin front ofhe issuing stream oi' airor gas, 4und ut the sume time to create a suction or draught through seidv tubes from their opposite end, thus giving an' effective or propelling power to the boat, in anequivulent manner to dire'ctptructio'n, equal to theureal of the larger tube or tubes, subject-to the expansive or efpunded iol-ce of the air or gus ivithin'jthe limit f said tube orV tubes, andthroughout a considerable portionolits or their length"I the suction producedin the remaining portiopiofthe length in rear, as it were, of the orifice in the smaller pipe or pipes d, favoring the general eiiieieney, while, as the air orgas is restrainled from scattering or ex\pending itself otherwise than within the tube or tubes, its full effective force is made available in the directionfj required, and against a; tolerablycompact body of Water. The tubes a and c having the jet-pipes din them, with their orifices arranged as described, are located, it will be observed, to eiect propulsion of the vessel, while the cross-tubes b, with their jet-pipes, serve to effect the steering or turning of the same. Forpropulsiou or movement of the vessel in a. l'orwerd directiii, the orifices c in the jet-pipes d tQ the tubes a and c, should face in a. backward direction,
'To steer or turn the vessel in o osito directions, the i es cl in the tubes b ma' be made ca ame of turnincf so PP P P .7 P a as to reverse the position of the orifices e, from facing right to facing left, or vice versa.' The arrangement of lthe tubes a in or through the front portion ofthe boat or vessel, contributes to diminish bow or forward resist-A ance in sailing.
Though not restricting the invention to the employment of any partieulur gas or air, or mode of generating or producing the same, it will here sulice to say that the pipes cl are shown in the drawing asideriving their supply of' compressed air from reservoirs R, which may have the fluid forced into them by a motor or powergenerator, consisting of a free piston working in a cylinder, S, lay-gaseous explosion, to give it start-ing-imp'e'tilsa but which power-generator it is unnecessary here to rrr/ore minutely describe, as the same forms the subject 'of a separate pending application for patent, and the necessary power may be otherwise produced.
What is here claimed, and desired to be, secured by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the tubes c b, open at both ends with the jet-tubesd, arranged to project Within the l former intermedintely of their length, and with theirjet-orifices facing either open end of 'said larger tubes, sub'- stantially as shown and described.
