T0 all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS QUINTUs QUARTERMAINE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing in the city of Peterborough, in the county of Peterborough, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, accountant and auditor, have invented a new and useful Emergency Bow- Rudder, of which the following is a specilication.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a side elevation, partly in section, of a ship provided with my invention, and Fig. 2. is a top plan partly in section.
My invention relates to the use of an emergency bow rudder and the object of my invention is to enable a ship (X) to be steered more eliiciently by placing a rudder (A) in the bow of the vessel below watermark, so as to bring her head rapidly around to port or starboard as desired. The emergency rudder (A) while not in use is entirely inside the vessel in position shown by full lines, thus offering no external resistance to her passage through the water. In order to project the emergency bow rudder, hydraulic power, steam, motor power, pneumatic power and exploded gases can be used, controlled mechanically from any part of the vessel. The emergency bow rudder, when in use will be in extended position as shown at (A), and when in this position it will be operated by the ordinary steering apparatus. At the back of the rudder are two hydraulic cylinders (B and B), in
which are pistons (C and C), with the forward ends attached to a rudder-post (D) as shown.
This emergency bow rudder can be used almost instantaneously to avoid collisions at sea, by forcing the rudder out immediately and swinging the bow off an obstruction, instead of the stern on to the obstruction as does a stern rudder. It may be further used for maneuvering vessels. In case of accidents to a ships rudder, the vessel can be navigated by the emergency bow rudder.
With this emergency bow rudder an ocean liner could be made to turn at right angles to her original course in less than one hundred (100) yards without the slightest danger.
My emergency bow rudder, when used in conjunction with the after rudder, places the vessel under the immediate and absolute control of the helmsman, thereby insuring the safety of human life and valuable property.
l/Vhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- The combination of a ship and a rudder horizontally adjustable in the bow thereof back and forth to operative and inoperative position.
