15,603. Clark, A. M., [Rissmuller, L.]. Aug. 1. Fats and fatty oils.-Relates to the bleaching of whale and seal oils by means of oxidizing- substances. The oil is treated with an oxidizing-substance such as a solution of a bichromate or of a permanganate in a tank provided with stirring-arms. The materials are stirred violently to produce an emulsion, and an acid such as sulphuric acid is added. The agitation is continued, and steam admitted to raise the temperature just to the point at which the development of oxygen begins. When the bleaching is effected, the agitation is discontinued, and steam is admitted to destroy the emulsion and allow the oil to separate.
