Abstract
24,821. Thompson, W. P., [Nielsen, A. N.]. Dec. 5. Fatty oils.-Relates to a process for bleaching whale and seal oils. The oil is strongly agitated with a weak solution of bichromate of potash or other similar oxygen-producing substance to produce an emulsion, dilute sulphuric acid or any other suitable acid is added, and agitation continued, a low temperature being maintained till a good emulsion is obtained. The temperature is then slowly raised by means of a steam pipe, until the developement of oxygen begins. Agitation is maintained till the bleaching is complete. Finally, the temperature is raised sufficiently to destroy the emulsion and cause the oil to separate.
