Abstract
286,794. Mond, A. L., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 11, 1926. Purifying fats and fatty acids; soaps, processes for making.-Fatty substances of vegetable and animal origin are bleached by the in conjunction, of one or more inorganic non-gaseous oxidizing agents, such as permanganate, chlorate, or hypochlorite, and one or more inorganic agents acting by reduction or by adsorption, such as nascent hydrogen or bleaching earths. Prior to being bleached, the substance may be carbonized with concentrated sulphuric acid, or made into an emulsion with the aid of soap, and during the bleaching an amount of acid at least equivalent to the alkali in the permanganate, chromate, or chlorate employed, may be added. After being bleached, the substance may be transformed into soap which is then bleached with hypochlorite. In examples :-Ground nut oil is treated with permanganate and chlorate in presence of sulphuric acid and then with nascent hydrogen produced by the addition of zinc dust. aluminium, &c. Soya bean oil fatty acid, neutral or acid plant oils, or maize oil may be similarly bleached. Rape seed oil is treated with a bleaching earth and sodium hypochlorite; ground nut oil is bleached with active carbon and permanganate in presence of sulphuric acid ; rape seed oil is bleached with active carbon and hypochlorite; tallow, slaughterhouse fat, palm kernel oil or the corresponding fatty acids, bleached as above described, are transformed into a sodium soap and then treated with hypochlorlte, or are transformed into a potassium soap, chlorine being introduced into the mixture during the transformation to produce the necessary hypochlorite.
