14,028. Cottier, J. W. Aug. 4. Windows.-Relates to means for balancing and holding sliding sashes for carriages &c. The sashes j, k are balanced by coiled springs g mounted on spindles of toothed wheels which gear with racks a fixed to the sash stiles. For heavy sashes, strong springs are used, and intermediate gearing may be interposed between the spindles and racks as shown in Fig. 3. For small sashes, the springs may be dispensed with, and the sashes may be secured at any height by spring pins l, engaging with the racks, or by springs g<x>, engaging with the toothed wheels. The wheels may be carried by the sashes, and the racks may be fixed to the frame.
