11,724. Reid, J. June 28. Pistons.-Relates to hydraulic or high-pressure pistons. Fig. 1 shows in section a single-acting piston. The packing-ring c has an inner inclined surface, between which and the wedge-ring d the working fluid is admitted through suitable ports. Springs acting on the wedge-ring keep the packing expanded when working fluid is absent. Supplementary rings i, i<1>, i<2> or lips d' are provided. A double-acting piston with a wedge-ring is also shown. Fig. 3 shows in section another form of piston. In this annular V-grooves are formed between flanges c<3> on the split packing-rings and the cover-plates, whereby the pressure of the working fluid causes the rings to expand. Suitable tongue pieces are provided, and springs n for keeping the packing expanded when fluid pressure is absent. Reference is made to Specification No. 12,675, A.D. 1885.
