Within a recess formed between the junk-ring D and piston body A is lodged an inner abutment ring G, which is solid. The periphery of this ring is formed with two inclined surfaces against which the divided packing-rings K, L bear. Clearance is allowed between the rings and the recess in which they lie, and between the cut ends of the rings, the latter being closed by overlapping tongue-pieces N. In grooves in the piston and junk-ring, spring rings R, S are placed. These rings are rather larger in diameter than the grooves, and are contracted by being forced into place, the reaction serving to press the packing-rings K, L against the inclined faces of the ring G, whereby they are kept tight.
