Abstract

24,861. Smith, M. H. Dec. 14. Belts and bands; belt forks ; belt forks, operating. -Relates to variable-speed gear in which a belt is moved along conical rollers. A series of pads or shoes are threaded or pivoted on a cord, wire, belt, or chain so as to be free to accommodate themselves to the slopes of the cones. Figs. 4 and 5 show blocks 5, fitted with shoes of leather or the like mounted directly upon the round bodies 4 of the links of a chain. In another arrangement, the shoes consist, each of a series of thicknesses of raw hide clamped between metal plates ; they are mounted in the chain links upon pins which lie at right-angles to the joint pins. One arrangement for mounting the blocks on a leather belt is shown in Figs. 14 and 15 ; in another, a lug or stud on the back of the block fits directly in an eye in the belt, which is stiffened by cross-bars, and, in another, the blocks, built up on a metal foundation, are pivoted in brackets riveted across the belt. Fig. 1 shows such a belt connecting a pair of conical rollers and movable along them, to vary the speed ratio, by means of trough-shaped guides 27, one on each side of the gear. The guides are secured upon the nuts 26 of screws 25, and are tilted to follow the slopes of the rollers by guiderods 28 which pass through sockets 29 on the nuts. The arrangement described in Specification No. 13,827, A.D. 1899, may be applied for lowering and raising the driven pulley, fur the purpose of starting and stopping and for reversing by means of friction gearing.
