Abstract

6121. Earle, O. T., and Newton, C. W. March 21. Sectional and water-tube boilers.-Relates to a form of boiler, adapted for use at sea, with removable sections, shown in transverse and longitudinal vertical section, respectively, in Figs. 3 and 4, and, as an independent improvement, to a construction of water bottom, one form of which is shown in Fig. 16, to be applied beneath the grate of a boiler. Each section of the boiler shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is composed of vertical tubes E, made in parts a, b, c, of decreasing diameter as shown, depending from a double steam and water drum G, I, and connected below to two forkshaped manifolds M, M. Downcomers F, F connect the ends of the drums G with the manifolds M, M. The sections hang from supports R, R, in which T-pieces S may slide during insertion and withdrawal. The steam drums I are all connected at the front to the steam pipe J, and at the rear the water drums Q are connected by the surface blow-off attachments to the mud drum N. The manifolds M are also connected together and to the mud drum N as shown. Cocks are fitted to permit any one of the sections to be isolated. At the sides, pipes P, P, and downcomers at each end, connect water and steam drums with the mud drums Q, and feedwater-heating pipes 0, O are arranged at the back and sides of the furnace. Side sections cast in one piece may replace the arrangement of side tubes and drums shown. The water bottoms, Fig. 16, are cast in one piece with webs D between the tubes. The side members are formed with tube-junction sockets a, a, and the end members with nipples b to enable several sections to be connected together. A circular water bottom of similar construction is illustrated in the Specification.
