Abstract

18,711. Sherry, J. C. Aug. 21, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Water-tube boilers. -Consists chi e f ly in enclosing the combustion and water-tube space with a continuous water jacket on all sides, the jacket being extended horizontally so as to form the water and steam chamber, thereby dispensing with ordinary headers and the upper drum.Smoketubes, tie-rods and stays, and airsupplying arrangements are also provided. Fig. 1 shows a sectional side elevation of the boiler, and Fig. 2 a front elevation partly in section. From front to rear of the combustion space, which is crossed by the baffle 5, vertical rows of water-tubes extend, the rows being upwardly and downwardly inclined alternately. Stay bolts 7<1> alternate with the water-tubes and connect the inner and outer sheets Short smoke-tubes 7 connect the combustion space with the uptake. Opposite the end of each watertube is a hole in the outer sheet of the waterjacket for the insertion or removal of the tube and for rolling the same in the tube-sheet. Feedwater is delivered through the pipe 17 and distributed to the side water-legs by the branches 18. The crown-sheet and top are stayed by braces composed of stirrups 19, 20 united by bolts 21.
