Lighting and extinguishing gas.-In burners provided with pilot jets, the pressure of the incoming gas is utilized to actuate a compound valve by which, as the channel to the main burner is opened, the channel supplying gas to the pilot jet is either entirely closed when this jet is provided with a catalytic igniter, or is partly closed when no such igniter is used. Fig. 1 shows the position of the parts before, and Fig. 2 after, the gas has been turned on. When the gas cock has been slightly turned on, the small quantity of incoming gas traverses the channels h<2>, d, Fig. 1, to the pilot jet e<2>, and is lit by the igniter e. As the cock is further turned on, the pressure of the gas increases until it is sufficient to lift the valves g<2>, i on the common spindle g to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which the ball j cuts off the supply of gas to the pilot jet e<2>, while the valve i rises clear of the channel f by which gas passes to the main burner B. The Provisional Specification states that the valve i may be replaced by a valve which is actuated by the pressure of the gas upon a diaphragm.
