Abstract

A flame failure safety device for a burner is actuated by fluid pressure produced by the flow of gas or other fuel from a jet when there is no flame. A valve body has a main valve 12 carried by a stem 20 attached to a diaphragm 22 dividing a housing 23 into two chambers 24, 26 and an auxiliary valve 17 movable by means of a button 18, and a port 33 in a passage between the valve seats is connected by a pipe 34 and aerating injector 35 to a pilot jet 36 in axial alignment with a ceramic head 31 which communicates through a pipe 29 with chamber 26. Diaphragm 22 is loaded upwardly by a light spring 37. In operation button 18 is pressed to close valve 17 and open valve 12, allowing gas to flow to the pilot burner and as long as the pilot burner is alight no pressure other than the atmosphere acts on diaphragm 22 and the pressure of the gas keeps the valve 12 open, release of button 18 allowing gas to flow through an outlet 12 to the main burner. If the pilot is extinguished gas flows into the head 31 to act on diaphragm 22 and close the valve 13.
