Abstract

Tyres, pneumatic etc.; felloes or rims.-Relates mainly to means for attaching pneumatic tyres to rims, Specification No. 9697, A.D. 1897, being referred to. Each edge of the outer cover C of the tyre, shown in section in Figs. 3 and 4, is provided with inextensible segments M, which are connected together by flexible strips M'. The rim R has transverse projections P over which the strips M' pass, and the cover C has an inextensible tread so that inflation of the air tube I forces the segments into the bottom of the rim and so attaches the tyre. In modifications, the strips M<1> may be replaced by hinges, or they may form part of the segments M. The sections shown in Figs. 20, 21, and 26 represent tyres which are attached by rings of segments M, one form of which is shown in Fig. 10. The inextensible segments M are secured to a circumferential strip B of extensible material, and the band thus formed is enclosed in one e3ge H of the tyre. The other edge may be placed between the edge H and the rim R, or it may have an inextensible wire T', Fig. 20, or it may be provided with an airtight chamber A, Fig. 21. In modifications, each edge may have an enclosed band, the segments in the form shown in Fig. 26 also having projections M<3> which take into depressions R<1> in the rim R. The tyre C, shown in section in Fig. 6, is secured to the rim R by means of segments M, which are pivoted to an inextensible ring G so that they may occupy either of the positions indicated by the full and the dotted lines. A similar arrangement may be employed to attach each edge of the tyre, the rim being correspondingly shaped. Fig. 8 shows an inextensible ring which is divided into segments by the various forms of joints F<1>, F<2>, F<3>, F<4>. According to the Provisional Specification the tyre may be made of leather or skins, and a puncture may be repaired by inserting a rubber plug into the hole. An inner tyre of cork or the like may be employed.
