Abstract

24,459. Faas, R., and Reder, P. Oct. 22 Tyres, pneumatic, preventing puncture of. A puncture-proof band for pneumatic tyres is made from a fabric composed of two outer layers 1, 5 of closely-woven silk or linen, two inner thin sheets of caoutchouc 2, 4, and a central layer of paper 3. The five pieces are subjected to heat sufficient to liquefy the caoutchouc, and then the whole is compactly cemented together by the application of great pressure. This material is cut into strips about two inches wide and six inches long ; in these strips are cut longitudinal slits 7, and transverse slits 6 at intervals of two inches. The slits 7 are about one inch long and half an inch from the edge. Two such strips A, B are then placed together so that they overlap half their lengths, and are joined by passing the parts of one through the openings 6, 7 in the other. Similarly a number of strips are joined together to form a continous puncture-proof band. The band is enclosed in a casing of cotton, flannel, or similar fabric, and fitted to the inner tube for a tyre, or may be enclosed in a light rubber casing, and cemented to the tread of a single tube tyre.
