Abstract

15,913. Vernon, T. T. July 18. Tyres, pneumatic.-A pneumatic multi-cellular tyre is made by lapping together perforated or recessed strips of rubber or other materials, with or without intermediate unperforatod strips, in a closed vessel containing air or gas under pressure, and uniting the strips by cementing or vulcanizing, or both, so that the compressed air or gas is retained in the cavities in the structure. Fig. 4 shows a strip made up of a perforated rubber strip 1, a canvas band 3, and a rubber strip 2, which may also be perforated. Fig. 5 shows a combination of perforated and plain rubber strips. In other forms, several strips are combined so that the perforations or indentations do not coincide, and the strips may be bound together by flexible ties or circumferential bindings. The rubber strips 1, 2 may each be made up of canvas, woven wire, or like fabric, with a layer of rubber on each side. The strip is placed in a box 7, Fig. 1, and is led between the pressing-roller 10 and a tension roller 9, and thence to rollers 11, 12. The roller 11 runs in a tank 21 of a suitable adhesive solution, and the roller 12 is provided with means to adjust its pressure on the strip 8, or is placed in contact with the roller 11, and used in a manner like that followed in inking printing-rollers to determine the consistency of the solution. The strip is attached to the periphery of the rotary mould 13, which may be replaced by the wheel rim, and may be fitted with a pressing-roller 28. The box being closed, air &c. under pressure is admitted through the pipe 25, and the mould 13 is rotated until the strip is wound upon it. The first and last layer of the strip should be unperforated, or the last layer may consist of a band of steel, by means of which a great circumferential tension may be obtained. When the strip is wound, the sides of the mould 13 may be forced towards each other. Steam may then be admitted to the box or to a jacket on the box through the pipe 30 to vulcanize the rubber. According to the Provisional Specification, the gas may be generated in the cavities by placing in them substances which will gasify at the vulcanizing temperature and remain fixed.
