20,784. Clark, R. L. Sept. 10 Copying and carving machines.-Articles having curved or irregular surfaces are engraved or carved so that the copy will be an exact reproduction of the pattern. The pattern is carried on a chuck 12 mounted on a spindle 9 revolving in a headstock 7, and the work is carried on a chuck 13 mounted on a spindle 10 revolving in a headstock 8. A bar 32 carrying a tracer 33 at one end and a revolving cutter 34 at the other is pivoted between centre-pins 31 on a jaw 30 depending from a slide 29, and is supported at the extreme end on a rod 37. The cutter engages with the work at the side opposite to that at which the tracer engages with the pattern. Or, instead of this arrangement, the tracer and cutter may be at the same side of the pattern and work respectively, the bar 32 being in that case mounted so as to move parallel with itself in a horizontal plane. In either case a vertical feed movement, intermittent or continuous, is given to the bar 32. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the spindle 9, 10 and the slides conveying the bar 32 are in gear through worm, bevel, and screw gearing. In a modification, the spindles 9, 10 may be moved vertically. In a further modification, in lieu of mounting the tracer and cutter on the bar 32, they may be mounted on a bar 32<x> pivoted at one end.
