Electric railways and tramways on a road-contact or sectional - conductor system with electromagnetic switches. conductors; switches.-Two sets of road-contacts B,C are placed alternately, one set C being connected through the coil G of the magnet to the return or rail A, and the other set B to contacts g<2>, g<3> in two adjacent switches, of which the third contact g<1> is connected to the feeder H. Instead of studs B, C lengths of insulated rail with short brushes in place of the long collectors F, F<1> may be used. Current for picking up the switches, or for holding them up when the motor circuit is broken, is supplied by a battery E arranged as shown or otherwise, or by a small magneto-electric machine driven by hand or through a rack gearing from a treadle as shown in Fig. 4 overleaf. The driver's switch may have an extra contact to maintain the circuit when the motors are cut out.
