Abstract

4176. Cattori, M. Feb. 19. Electric railways on the series system. Relates to improvements o the arrangements described in Specifications No. 6212, A.D. 1894, and No. 20,529, A.D. 1895. Conductors; switches.- The Figures show the two rails used as conductors, but an overhead or other conductor may also be used. The rails are laid in insulated sections, and the gaps 1, 2, 3, 4, &c. between the sections are in pairs alternately opened and closed by hand or otherwise as the vehicle passes. Switches I, II at the ends of the line are alternately changed in a similar manner, so that the current flows in series through all the vehicles V, V<1>. The position of the switches is indicated below the Figure. When a single vehicle only is run, the gaps may be omitted and the poles of the generator D connected to the rails. An arrangement is also described for two generating-stations on the line, which is then practically a reduplication of that shown in Fig. 3, placed end to end. Fig. 8 shows a passing place on this system with the switch tongues and rail sections connected to a switch with contacts correspondingly numbered 1-10 by means of which current is supplied as the vehicles pass through and the single line parts are also kept properly in circuit.
