Abstract

5766. Butler, H. L. March 9. Electric railways and tramways on a road contact system with switches thrown by magnets on the vehicle. Reference is made to Specification No. 1493, A.D. 1898. Conductors; switches; collectors. -The switches are contained in segmental boxes d pivoted in frames a secured to the rails &c. These boxes are preferably made in two halves, and the lead g<1> or c<1> from the main is brought in at the pivot e. The circuit is completed when the box is lifted by a weighted flexible strip g<3> or d<3> which is connected to a block f or to side projecting lugs h from which current is taken by the collector. A second protecting-casing k may be provided inside the box d as shown in Fig. 4. If an insulated return is to be used, the switch arrangements are duplicated and the two lugs h are insulated from each other. The collector has magnets b and depressed portions o at its ends to raise and depress the boxes, which are held up by inturned flanges on the central part a<1> of the collector, or magnets may be used for this purpose.
